Greetings and salutations!
Does the idea of stepping in front of a camera make your heart race just a little (or a lot)? If you’re anything like me, the nerves are real—especially when you want your portraits to feel like the best version of your true self, not a stiff, awkward pose. With the year winding down and so many of us reflecting on milestones, family, and fresh starts, now is the perfect time to talk about building real camera confidence—whether you’re prepping for a professional session, snapping family photos, or just hoping to feel more at ease in your own skin.
What’s Coming Up?
Winter is a season of togetherness and new beginnings—a time when we gather for celebrations, update our family albums, or finally book that portrait session we’ve been putting off. If you’ve ever wished you could approach the camera with more confidence (and maybe even have some fun along the way), you’re in good company. I’ve worked with so many folks who start out camera-shy and leave their sessions surprised by how much they enjoyed the experience. This month, I’m sharing my favorite tips for turning nervous energy into genuine, joyful portraits you’ll actually love to see—and share!
Pro Tip of the Month: How to Build Camera Confidence for Portrait Sessions
- Let go of perfect—aim for real.
The most memorable portraits aren’t flawless; they’re honest. Wear what makes you feel good, bring your quirks, and let your personality show. Your real smile is always your best angle.
- Start with movement. Before the first photo, try a little warm-up—shake out your hands, stretch, or do a silly walk. Movement releases tension and helps you settle into your natural rhythm.
- Bring a comfort item. Whether it’s a favorite scarf, a cup of coffee, or your pet, having something familiar in your hands gives you something to focus on besides the camera. Suddenly, those nerves have somewhere to go.
- Breathe and pause often. There’s no rush. Take a deep breath between shots, close your eyes for a moment, and remember: you’re allowed to take up space and be seen, just as you are.
- Connect with your photographer.
A session is a conversation, not a performance. Share your worries, ask questions, and let your photographer guide you gently. The best portraits happen when you feel safe and supported.
If you’re hungry for more practical advice or want to hear stories from others who’ve found their confidence, you’ll find plenty of inspiration and encouragement on my blog. I regularly share behind-the-scenes tips and gentle pep talks to help you see yourself in a new light.
